Usually, people come to medical institutions for certain health ailments. The patient has no other choice, because he is suffering from an illness or pain. In cosmetic surgery, the patient and the doctor are partners, because the person comes to the clinic of his own free will. Our duty as doctors is to consult the patient in detail, advise him, inform him about the preparation for the operation and the postoperative period, and properly perform the operation itself. However, it is important not to forget that the patient, and in this case the partner, also contributes no less to the final result. He will have to survive the entire difficult postoperative period, and the most important thing is to trust and not doubt the doctor. It is not uncommon for people to break down after operations because they cannot accept the postoperative consequences, because they do not absorb the information that the final result can only be seen after several months, until the wounds heal. Fear before and after surgery is a normal reaction and state, but it is difficult when the patient is not supported by his close environment.
I am honest with patients already during the first consultations. I inform them that it takes time to get the final result. It is important to understand that this is normal and common in this field, otherwise there is a risk of psychological problems. Of course, I would really like psychologists to join the work of cosmetic surgeons, who would prepare the patient for the operation, help them survive all the difficulties after it, teach them to adequately react to the environment, and reduce stress and tension. However, at present, such practices are not used, so the patient must submit to the doctor and completely trust him.
I always advise patients to visit several cosmetic surgeons for a consultation to hear more opinions, because each of us has a different understanding of beauty. There is also a necessary "cooling off period" after expressing a desire to have surgery, because at that time a person relies on emotions, so it is important to listen to the rational mind.
It is necessary to undergo health examinations, not to eat for a certain period of time before the operation, and to take a responsible approach to sedatives prescribed by the doctor. Often, we suggest that people from other cities come to Kaunas one day before the operation and spend the night in order to avoid unwanted anxiety. These are the most important steps that a patient must take before the operation. As you can see, not only surgeons but also patients prepare for the operation (laughs).
If a person arrives at the operating room without relieving stress, it means that they are not properly prepared. In this case, we are faced with greater bleeding, which complicates the work of the surgeons.
Indeed, each clinic has its own. Different doctors have their own tactics, which have worked best for them in the specifics of their work. Our clinic pays a lot of attention to preparation for surgery.
It can be said that the consultation is more important for the patient's decision-making. On the other hand, the doctor sometimes "loses" here. I often suggest that patients go for a consultation not to one, but to several doctors and choose the one that is closest to them. The choice is very important for successful results, because every surgeon knows how to operate, but what operation to perform in order to achieve an aesthetic result, especially in the facial area, is a completely different matter. What the results of the operation will be depends largely on the surgeon's understanding of aesthetics and experience. Therefore, I always advise the patient to go to the selected surgeon for a consultation and ask him to show his work, and then talk about the doctor's understanding of beauty. To achieve the desired results, the understanding of beauty of both the patient and the surgeon must coincide or at least be similar.
From the patient's side, preparation has not changed at all in 30 years. What has changed is my experience. The approach to the patient has become much deeper, I realized that he is not a patient, but my partner. If the patient does his homework properly, and I fulfill his expectations, then we get results that satisfy both parties. In my work practice, I emphasize mutual work.
The fundamental difference is that in ordinary surgery the doctor cures the disease, while here, in aesthetic surgery, the operation may be successful, but the client may be dissatisfied with the result. Therefore, in order to avoid this, again, I repeat, it is important to consult as much as possible.
I do not agree that beauty is understood differently. But many people disagree with me. (smiles). Over the years of work, I have realized that there are two ways: unconditionally fulfilling the patient's order, without my own interpretation, but then, I can say that the patient bears a greater share of the responsibility. The second way more often brings the desired results: the patient speaks correctly, I understand his wishes, but I see that in order to get the desired result, many more procedures need to be performed. During each consultation, I try to emphasize this to patients. Sometimes I even have to refuse surgery, because I simply see that the patient's desired image will not be achieved. I do not make all my insights out of thin air - I rely on my many years of work experience. (smiles)
