Lip augmentation, or various other lip shape corrections, are performed when a person is not satisfied with their shape, wants fuller lips, to restore their former appearance, which changes with age, or wishes to harmonize their facial proportions. Due to the aging process and harmful habits, like all human skin, lips also lose collagen and fat. As a result, they wrinkle, become uneven, and no longer look as they did in youth. However, lip augmentation is performed not only due to age-related changes, but also when a person naturally has very thin lips and wishes to thicken them. The cost of lip augmentation typically depends on the chosen correction method.
Lip augmentation is one of the most common procedures today, performed on patients of a wide range of ages. Naturally, lip plumping can be done in several different ways, which the patient chooses during a consultation with a doctor. One method is surgical lip enhancement with implants, while other methods involve lip injections, during which various tissue fillers are injected or the patient's own fat is transplanted. All injection methods usually need to be repeated.
Lip augmentation using implants is performed through small incisions on the inside of the lip, where implants are inserted. Their disadvantage is that they can shift out of place, cause inflammation, or an rejection reaction. Implants are the longest-lasting lip augmentation procedure, as they can last at least two years.
Lips can be augmented by transplanting one's own fat, which is taken from other areas of the body (usually the abdomen, thighs, or hips), specially processed, and injected into the lips. This is lip plumping using a natural product from your own body.
This is currently the most popular lip plumping method, which is quite simple, fast, and convenient. However, the downside is that it's possible to overdose on filler during this procedure, and the procedure also needs to be repeated.
Lip lifting is a procedure where a lengthened upper lip is surgically lifted. This happens over time due to age-related changes in the body. A lengthened lip is one of those signs that reveals a person's true age, so with a light and moderate lift, feminine charm is restored, teeth are visible beautifully when smiling, and the lips appear particularly youthful.
The most popular method for lip shape correction at the moment is tissue filler injections. This is a good way to enhance lips because lip plumping is performed simply and quickly. However, it also has drawbacks – it can be easily overdosed, as fillers attract water molecules, resulting in a „duck lip“ appearance, a term that has even been coined for it.
I have been using lip correction with fat grafting for about 20 years and have seen good results throughout this period. The disadvantages of this operation are that fat grafting is a more complex procedure because not all the fat takes, and it's not possible to graft it very precisely, so I always combine these two procedures to achieve the most natural and effective result.
Lip lifting, a surgical procedure to shorten and elevate the lips, has become very popular. After the surgery, only a barely visible scar remains at the base of the nose. A lip lift is a very effective procedure for correcting age-related lip lengthening, which is one of the signs of a aging face. However, I also perform many of these surgeries on young girls and women who have congenitally longer lips or desire a more prominent upper lip shape to showcase their beautiful front teeth.
