Gynecomastia is the enlargement of the mammary glands in men, caused by an excessively high level of female hormones in the body. Typically, breasts that form in boys during puberty disappear around the ages of 18-20. However, in some cases, this problem arises due to being overweight or various external factors such as medications, steroids, tumors, and other diseases. This condition can lead to enlargement of one or both breasts. If a patient is significantly overweight and then loses weight, the skin on the breasts often cannot retract sufficiently and remains loose. In such situations, the male breasts become saggy, and the nipples stretched. In these cases, exercise usually does not help to firm up the chest to make it appear masculine, and surgery becomes necessary.

Gynecomastia in men can cause serious psychological problems, self-doubt, and a decrease in self-esteem. Men fear taking off their shirts in public and avoid intimate situations. Gynecomastia is a solvable problem that can be treated surgically. It is already a common procedure for men, performed by plastic surgeons.

Operation

When there is excess fat in men's breasts, it is removed during liposuction surgery. This is done by making a small incision in the armpit, through which a cannula is inserted to suction out the fat. If liposuction alone is not sufficient, a small incision is made along the edge of the nipple areola, through which glandular tissue and excess skin are removed. The incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures. If necessary, drains are inserted to allow excess fluid to drain. After the drains are removed, the chest is bandaged with a special elastic bandage.

After surgery

The results of the surgery are visible immediately. Initially, swelling, partial numbness of the chest, pain that can be managed with medication, and a scar at the incision site will be present. A special compression garment must be worn for 1–2 weeks. You can return to work after a few days, depending on how you feel overall, and resume physical activity after a month. Sunbathing is not recommended for about six months after surgery to prevent the scars from darkening.
